The National Insurance number that never seemed to arrive

Nobody at my university mentioned that you don't need a National Insurance number to start working. I assumed I did, because that is what it sounded like every time someone mentioned it in passing. So I turned down extra shifts at a part-time job I'd already been offered, waiting for a letter that took [SPECIFIC DETAIL: how many weeks Ananya's NI number actually took] to turn up. I found out afterwards, from a coursemate, that I could have just started and sorted the tax code later. That is the entire reason the first guide on this site exists.

The council tax bill I didn't see coming

A few weeks into my first term, a council tax bill landed at my shared house addressed to me personally. The driving licence surprise

I'd assumed my Indian driving licence would just keep working in the UK indefinitely, the way it had in a couple of other countries I'd visited. It does not work like that here, and finding out involved more digging through gov.uk pages than I want to admit, at a point when I had other, more pressing things to sort out. Why this site isn't just for Indian students

I'm Indian, and a few of the guides here, the ones about NRE and NRO accounts, for instance, are specifically about things that only apply if you're an NRI. But most of what catches people out when they move to the UK has nothing to do with where they're from. Every international student and every expat I've spoken with since, from Nigeria, from Poland, from Malaysia, from the US, has some version of the same National Insurance number confusion or the same surprise council tax bill. So that is who this site is for: anyone moving to or living in the UK who is tired of guides that either state the obvious or get the actual process wrong.

What we're trying to do differently

Most of what's written about this stuff online falls into two categories: official pages that are accurate but hard to parse under stress, and content-farm guides that read like nobody involved has actually gone through the process. We're trying to write the third kind: the one that tells you what actually happens, how long it actually takes, and where people like us actually got it wrong.

It is a small, growing set of guides right now, written by people who've been through the specific mess we're writing about, not a large content team working from a keyword list. If something on this site is wrong or out of date, or you've been through a version of this we haven't covered yet, we'd genuinely like to hear about it.
