Sorted in UK

Privacy & Cookie Policy

Sorted in UK is a static content site. There's no account system, no login, and nothing you type into it is sent to us, so this policy is shorter than most, because there genuinely isn't much happening behind the scenes yet.

Who we are

Sorted in UK (https://sortedinuk.com) publishes guides for international students and expats moving to and living in the UK. For UK GDPR purposes, we're the data controller for this site. You can reach us at hello@sortedinuk.com.

What we collect, and what we don't

This site has no server-side database and no forms that submit anywhere. Nothing you type into the driving licence deadline calculator, the guarantor decision tool, or the guide checklists leaves your own browser. We never see it, and we couldn't hand it over to anyone even if asked, because it was never sent to us in the first place.

The only data collection that happens is standard web server logging by our hosting provider (Vercel), IP address, browser type, and pages requested, kept briefly for security and performance purposes, and, if you've clicked "Accept all" on the cookie banner, anonymised usage analytics through Google Analytics. We don't currently run Google Analytics on this site. If we turn it on in future, it will only load after you actively accept, never by default, and this policy will be updated to describe exactly what it collects at that point.

Cookies and similar technologies actually in use

UK law (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, alongside UK GDPR) requires us to tell you exactly what's stored on your device and why. Here's everything, in full:

NameTypePurposeNeeds your consent?
cookie-consentlocalStorageRemembers whether you accepted or rejected non-essential cookies, so we don't ask every visit. No, strictly necessary
ni-number-checklistlocalStorageRemembers which steps you've ticked off on the National Insurance number guide. No, strictly necessary
_ga, _gid (Google Analytics)CookieWould tell us which guides get read and roughly how, so we know what to write next.Yes, not currently active

Strictly necessary storage doesn't legally require your consent, since the site can't provide the feature you asked for without it, a checklist that doesn't remember your ticks isn't much of a checklist. Anything else, like analytics, only runs if you click "Accept all" on the banner. Rejecting, or just closing the banner, means only the strictly necessary storage above runs.

How long we keep things

Anything stored in your browser (the two localStorage items above) stays until you clear your browser's site data or click "Reject all," whichever comes first. It never reaches us, so there's nothing on our end to delete. Server logs from our hosting provider are kept briefly on a rolling basis and then discarded automatically. If Google Analytics is switched on in future, its default retention window (currently 14 months for Google's standard settings) will apply, and we'll update this page to say so explicitly.

Your rights under UK GDPR

Because we don't hold personal data about you on any server we control, most of the rights below have little to act on in practice, but you still have them, and we want to be upfront about that rather than skip the section:

  • The right to be informed about how your data is used (this page)
  • The right to access any personal data we hold about you
  • The right to have inaccurate data corrected
  • The right to have your data erased
  • The right to restrict or object to processing
  • The right to data portability

To exercise any of these, email hello@sortedinuk.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), if you think we've got something wrong.

Changes to this policy

If we add analytics, affiliate tracking, or anything else that changes what's collected, we'll update this page and the cookie table above to match, not bury the change somewhere else.
